After reading this
review, I thought "Damn... 31$ for a piece of plastic with some holes
cut in it, and some LEDs?? I can do better than that!"
So I did! (Sort of)
My main rig in the states is called "Area 69", and its got a funky translucent case. See that little chunk in the middle just above the floppy drive opening? Thats for sticking a zipdrive or something like that in there. Im never going to use one of those, so I thought of modifying that little plastic panel thing so that it would have a neat glowing effect, with "AREA 69" as a silhouette.
The light for this project came from a really bright blue laser LED keychain light I stole off my dad. Normally one of these would probably cost 4 bucks, so I'm putting this mod in the cheap mods section.
I printed off "AREA 69" in a nice thick font, on some card that was just thick enough to block out all light from behind it.
I used scissors and an Xacto knife to cut out the letters, and superglue to stick them onto the panel plastic.
I ripped apart the keychain and got the LED. I soldered on some wires, and connected it to a molex Y cable for power. The keychain used 3x 1.5v batteries so I ran the LED off of 5v from the PC. If you can afford it, put a resistor in series with the LED so it doesn't blow!
Poke the LED just behind the panel and...
Yay. It looked much nicer in real life though.
